When I made the leap into triathlon, it was a commitment to improve my health through a commitment to athletics. What I didn’t know was that I was really making a commitment to lifestyle change. Eventually, I went on the 9 month journey to become an Ironman. I did this while working as a software consultant travelling 2 weeks out of every month. What I found was that, I was consciously making new life changes that applied to not only my fitness, but my career, my relationships, my physiology, and my overall mental and emotional state. My goal of becoming an Ironman transformed my life and my perspective. I met a lot of inspirational people along the way which have given me the courage to pursue a lifestyle based on wellness and fulfillment. As an amateur athlete and food lover, Dan enjoys the exploration of fueling his fit lifestyle. As a software consultant training for triathlons, Dan had the unique challenge of finding nutritional, delicious, fast, and nourishing food solutions to energize his body and soul. Dan grew up in a household where the family style of eating, cooking, and sharing stories was ingrained into the lifestyle. Dan’s mother, Elaine, immigrated from China funded by the money his great grandfather sent back while working in Chinese restaurants throughout the midwest. When the family came to America in 1978 they always helped out at the extended families’ restaurant. To this day she is a power to be reckoned with in the kitchen while cooking alongside Dan’s grill master father, Ken. Jeff, one of Dan’s brothers made cooking his career and is currently a successful chef in San Francisco. The psychology of two thriving business owning parents, supporting three exceedingly active, growing boys hungry for sustenance, and always making time for family dinners has been ingrained into Dan’s life. He feels blessed to have access to so many amazing recipes, each with their own unique story. Ride for World Health is a cycling team and 501(c)3 organization based out of Columbus, OH that is centered around a 3,200-mile ride, traversing the country from San Diego to Washington D.C. We are comprised of people from across the country who share similar passions about the need for change in both international and domestic health care. Since its founding in 2006, R4WH has been dedicated to creating a dialogue on the state of healthcare in communities across the world. By bringing together activists from across the country, we hope to inspire other medical professionals, volunteers, and communities-at-large to stand up as a unified voice for the millions who suffer at home and abroad. Throughout our ride, we raise significant funds to support non-profit organizations whose goals are consistent with our vision. R4WH empowers our audience to become informed and active global citizens through a Coast-to-Coast lecture series that is presented in most of our destination cities. In April and May of 2014, a group of medical students, health care professionals, and community representatives will participate in The Ride to promote education and awareness of global and domestic health concerns as well as raise needed funds for this year’s beneficiaries: Empower and Advance, HEAL Africa, and PODEMOS. Donations Donations of any size are welcomed and appreciated. Each rider is committed to meeting a fundraising goal that goes directly to our beneficiaries. They are responsible for most of the personal costs to participate in the ride. Hope For The Day has chosen to sponsor me as we launch a movement to help spread the message that a healthy body creates a healthy mind. This launch officially begins on March 25, 2014 as I join Ride for World Health in San Diego, CA to ride across America to Washington, D.C. Hope For The Day is a nonprofit movement committed to utilizing music, art, and creativity as a defense mechanism to suicide. Their alternative approach strives to offer education, prevention and hope through creative expression. Through my forms of creative expression, cycling and an imaginative approach to promoting wellness and fulfillment, I will be helping to kick-start their healthy body, healthy mind initiative. My entire life has consisted of school, internships, and working in the corporate world in pursuit of what many perceive as the American Dream. I’ve worked as a software consultant for the past four years and have been content with the lifestyle it afforded me. During the countless hours running and biking while training for my Ironman I had a lot of time to think about my priorities. I decided to leave my corporate job behind in pursuit of a lifestyle that helps me achieve my own dreams. I left with the hope that I could use my creative expression as a way to help enrich lives and positively affect the communities around me. I signed up for Ride for World Health to help educate and fundraise for glboal health care issues. As a part of the healthy body/healthy mind initiative, I will be using my our bicycling journey across America to help start a movement for global change and awareness. In the communities we cycle to, R4WH riders deliver a lecture series to educate our audiences on both international and domestic health care issues. Topics discussed range from good hygiene skills, childhood obesity, mental health, and health maintenance to disease in poverty, women’s and children’s health, access to healthcare, politics on foreign aid, and the pathophysiology of infectious diseases. My focus on the healthy body/healthy mind connection is rooted in both a personal and professional exposure to the issues of mental health. Globally, 1 in 4 people suffer from mental disorders. Four of the six leading causes of years lived with disability are depression, alcohol use disorders, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Hi everyone, my name is Dan. Follow me on my journey to finding a fun and fit lifestyle. My adventures in triathlon, cycling, running, fitness, cooking, and meeting like-minded inspirational started while I sat as a couch potato after reconstructive knee surgery. After three major knee injuries, I felt deflated, discouraged, and disappointed. I decided I needed to focus on being more deliberate about my athletic endeavors. I set a goal to finish my physical therapy and train for triathlons year round. For the past 3 years I have stayed committed to the sport of triathlon while maintaining a busy job as a travelling software consultant. Running, cycling, and swimming became a form of meditation for me. When I am out on my own, my mind clears, and I can focus on my physiology and my surroundings. In 2012, with the encouragement of friends and family, I signed up for Ironman Louisville 2013. I decided to start this website while I was training to become an Ironman. During my journey, I learned that becoming an Ironman takes a lot of individual dedication, hard training, and lifestyle changes. More importantly, I learned that all of my efforts would not have been possible without the support of my friends, family, community and all of the people in my personal, work, triathlon, running, cycling, and fitness circles. I realized that not only were all of these people helping me transform my life, but I have a platform to help transform others lives as well. Through my experiences I learned to follow my passions and dedicate my life to the one thing I am most passionate about: enriching lives through health and wellness by living a fun, fit, and fulfilling lifestyle.
